Obesity in Ireland

You probably don’t know me, so I have to start by saying that I love Ireland. If it were possible to marry a country, I would marry Ireland. Beautiful, green, lovely Ireland.
So this is why I’ll probably write quite a few articles on Ireland.

However, one shouldn’t be blinded by love, which is why I cannot say Ireland is perfect.

Here are some alarming facts:

Did you know…

– 300,000 kids are obese? …and this number increases by 10,000 every year.
– 1 in 5 children are obese?

This is where Ireland stands: (not good, not good at all)

Jamie Oliver’s food revolution

I don’t even know where to start… Good god, when Jamie was crying — I felt like crying! HOW are there people who don’t want to change their unhealthy lifestyle?? That radio bastard – how closed-minded is he that he doesn’t even KNOW what eating healthy looks like? “I don’t want to eat salad all day.” That was his answer. REALLY? I mean, COME ON, pick up a bloody cook book! Eating healthy has nothing to do with his idea of eating healthy. *#@&, if you eat salad all day, you’re not on your way to becoming healthy, you’re on your way to becoming anorexic!

Anyway, America needs – and I mean DESPERATELY needs – a food revolution.

Jamie Oliver:
You are an absolute inspiration. You are on your way to changing America, don’t give up! It’s overwhelming but don’t give up! There are always closed-minded bastards who resist to change, but you‘re on the right path.
Good luck !! THANK YOU!

Man.. I wish there were a thousand Jamie Olivers.

Food, inc

I just watched the documentary Food, Inc. for the first time today and, though I honestly wasn’t surprised, it made me so sad and angry!

How is it that we can’t criticize food?! How is it that Oprah can’t just say that she doesn’t want to eat burgers anymore?! What kind of freedom of speech is this??? I just don’t understand any of this. But now I have to look into it, because it’s absolutely horrifying. What can I say? Do I have to keep my mouth shut? Because I won’t. I can assure you.
And of course – OF COURSE – it always comes back to the same damn problem: MONEY.
It’s always about money! Of course, because if Oprah says she won’t eat a burger, than thousands of people will say “Oooh, well then neither will I!”

Visit their website: http://www.foodincmovie.com/

Anyway, the documentary was great. I loved it. Though I felt like crying sometime during the first 10 minutes.. There’s a scene with baby chicks and, oh it’s horrible… I had a very Joey Tribbiani moment and just wanted to bring them all home with me. (Chandler holds the baby chick in the picture)

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was an extraordinary woman.

I’ll continue to write this article about Audrey Hepburn but here’s a little video with a series of pictures from her work with UNICEF… An organization I hope to work with some day.

Anti-cancer superfoods!

Do they work? I don’t know. Some say they do, some say they don’t. I honestly want to believe those that say that cancer-fighting foods exist and work… but with all the debate about every single thing these days, how can you be sure of anything at all?
But I have seen the lists of foods… and honestly, even if they don’t fight cancer, they’re good for a thousand other things – because you won’t see potato chips or gummy worms on the list. It’s healthy good yummy delicious food: fruits, vegetables (…and even red wine!) So put down those chips and think about it. So you’re not sure? At least you’re sure of all the bad junk food does to you. Need more proof?

I mean, MY GOD! Is that not completely OUTRAGEOUS???

Anyway… I have a lot to say about obesity but this is about anti-cancer food.

So here you go, here’s a list of supposedly good things to prevent cancer!

1. Green Tea

2. Garlic (super for everything after all!), onions and leeks

3. Chili peppers

4. Grapefruit, orange, lemon

5. Nuts (I literally just got up, went to the kitchen and got some nuts even though it’s 11:45PM)

6. Red wine (yaaaay!)

7. Tomatoes and carrots

8. Red cabbage and broccoli

9. Soy (go vegetarians!)

10. Watercress and Spinach

Reusable water bottle

Reusable water bottles are awesome and great for the environment!

About a year ago my mom and I bought a reusable bottle each. We live in Paris, and found some very pretty ones at WH Smith!

(My mom’s bottle)

Here is the website: Sigg

My mom got kind of mad because they can actually be a bit tricky to close… or stay closed at least. One day she opened her bag, and everything was wet because the top wasn’t closed right… But I haven’t had that problem. Anyway, if you choose this particular brand or any other doesn’t matter.

(my bottle)

Here is what was written on the Sigg website:

“Recycling your PET plastic water bottles is good… but using a reusable water bottle is much better for the environment.

«More than 90 percent of the environmental impacts from a disposable plastic bottle happen before the consumer opens it,» said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council. «Oil for plastic, oil for shipping, oil for refrigeration and, in a small % of bottles, oil for recycling – sadly most PET bottles go to landfills.»

Worldwide, over 60 billion tons of plastic waste is produced every year. Plastic is particularly damaging because it is not biodegradable and plastic particles eventually become part of the food chain – as they have for example in our oceans. In some parts of the sea, there is five times more plastic than plankton.”

Here is a great article about using reusable water bottles.

Homemade hair masks, conditioners, shampoos…

Homemade hair masks, conditioners, rinses and shampoos are so easy! I love trying them at home. Here are some you can try as well.

Watch The story of stuff: cosmetics and you’ll see why you’re better off making your own hair masks (and all cosmetics)

Honey & Olive Oil Hair Mask
Mix 2 tablespoon honey with 3 tablespoon olive oil. Apply throughly to hair. Cover hair with a shower cap. After 15 minutes shampoo and rinse well.

For Damaged Hair
Mash a ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil and massage into hair. Leave it for about 15 minutes. Rinse with soda water and then shampoo and condition.

Olive oil Hair Mask
Mix 5 tablespoons of olive oil with 2 eggs. Apply to hair. Wrap head with a shower cap. After 15 minutes rinse well.

Chamomile Rinse
1 cup boiling water, 1 tsp. chamomile flowers
Pour the water over the chamomile flowers; steep until it cools a bit. Strain out the flowers. Effect: This rinse soothes and heals the scalp and gives hair a silky sheen. You can also use the rinse to lighten blond hair.

After shampoo for frizzy hair
Mix 1 tablespoon of honey to a liter of water. Use it after ever hair wash with your usual shampoo.

After-shampoo rinse for shiny hair
Beat 2 eggs in a tablespoon of milk and apply for 5-7 minutes. Rinse.

I have a spray bottle that used to be a detangler, and when I was finished with it, I poured 1/4 of lemon juice and the rest of water. It’s a simple rinse that I use in the shower! I must say that ever since, my hair does seem a bit lighter!

– Into the Wild –

I think that I should probably start this blog by thanking Chris McCandless.
(and Jon Krakauer and Sean Penn)

If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I would be the way I am. I mean, after watching Into the Wild… I was changed – completely changed.

That’s why this blog is about society, activism… not just green living. But yes, basically reconnecting with Nature…

Chris McCandless, what an inspiration.
